A Day at the Zoo: How BCBN Supported Connection for Heart Families
In April 2025, ECHO (Evelina Children’s Heart Organisation) received a £3,000 grant from BCBN, enabling the delivery of a special day of connection and respite for families affected by congenital heart disease (CHD). The Fun and Friendship Day at the Zoo, held at London Zoo on 31 May, welcomed 301 attendees (328 including staff and volunteers).
The event brought together 77 families from across London and the South East, many of whom were meeting others with similar experiences for the first time. For parents and carers, the opportunity to spend time with people who understood the realities of living with CHD was deeply valued.
Feedback showed that families felt more connected and supported as a result of the day. New friendships were formed, conversations continued beyond the event, and informal peer support networks began to take shape. For many families, this was a rare opportunity to step away from clinical settings and spend time together in a relaxed, shared environment.
BCBN’s funding enabled ECHO to deliver an event that complemented its medical advocacy with meaningful social support. The success of the day reinforced the importance of creating spaces where heart families can connect, share experiences, and feel supported beyond hospital care.
