Art4Space a BCBN Grant Recipient
In September 2014, BCBN awarded Art4Space a £3000 grant for “Cementing History” – a mosaic and ceramic art piece designed and created by children and adults from the local community in Lambeth, South London. Art4Space promotes community art within schools and community settings in disadvantaged areas. The new Art4Space community centre in Stockwell delivers a range of community art activities and training courses to local schools, youth groups, local residents, tenants and resident groups, and local people experiencing ill health, disability or unemployment and will become the outward facing community focus of development running projects that make a real different in this local community.
The community workshops enhanced awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage and traditions, bringing generations together with a common goal for a more vibrant and cohesive community. The older people form the sheltered housing feel more connected and enjoyed having the opportunity to be creative. The project also provided a platform for local children to understand the value of looking at history and in providing a sense of place.
Art4Space ‘Cementing History’ workshop improved employment skills and self-confidence in some of its participants. Interns helped compile research for the project, supported the workshop activities and gained skills in mosaic making. The artwork produced a fantastic legacy of this project and will be viewed by hundreds of people over the coming years.
