Turning a small workshop into a life-changing space for growth and recovery

A £3,000 BCBN grant enabled Rammy Men to expand its NEET Woodwork project, supporting 176 participants with hands-on training, mental health support, and community connection—turning a small workshop into a life-changing space for growth and recovery.

How BCBN’s Grant Helped Rammy Men Rebuild Lives Through Woodwork

Thanks to a £3,000 grant from the BCBN Small Grants Initiative, Rammy Men has expanded its reach and transformed lives through the NEET Woodwork Project, a hands-on programme supporting individuals not in employment, education, or training. The funding enabled the charity to upgrade essential equipment, making workshops safer, more accessible, and inclusive for participants with disabilities or complex mental health challenges. What began as a modest woodwork workshop has become a gateway for people to rebuild confidence, develop new skills, and reconnect with community life.

Since receiving the grant, 176 people have taken part in the sessions, gaining not just practical experience but also measurable improvements in mental health, social connection, and employability. Over 758 hours of training have been delivered since April alone, with participants ranging from 16 to 65+ and representing diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. More than half of attendees came from deprived areas across Bury and Radcliffe, demonstrating the project’s success in reaching those most at risk of social exclusion.

The impact of BCBN’s support has been significant. Attendance across Rammy Men’s programmes has more than doubled, partnerships with local colleges and health agencies have strengthened, and the organisation’s turnover has grown by over 100% within a year. What may seem like a small grant has acted as a catalyst for lasting growth, helping Rammy Men employ new staff, expand services, and deepen its community impact across Greater Manchester.

Among the many success stories is Max, a talented young man living with ADHD and addiction. Through the support of Rammy Men, he overcame his challenges, rediscovered his passion for craftsmanship, and went on to launch his own furniture business.
